SOUTHERN VILLAGE
Fast Facts
Structure -- Three Haven solar shelters with lighting and wheelchair access.
Place -- The Havens are spread around Southern Village’s main gathering area. One sits across from the Lumina Movie Theater, one outside a doctor’s office, and one outside a yoga studio.
Bigger Picture -- At its core, Southern Village is about people. Neighbors connecting on front porches, gathering in the village center, and enjoying shared spaces. The addition of the Havens builds on that spirit, making it easier for residents to spend time outdoors together while also experiencing how sustainability works best when it’s visible, practical, and rooted in the places where people gather.

Project overview
Southern Village in Chapel Hill, NC, is all about community and connection. With 1,165 households, 60 local businesses, and 90 acres of greenspace, it’s the kind of place where front porches, local spots, and the village green bring people together.
It’s also where Spotlight Solar tested the very first Haven solar shelter.
Three Havens now live permanently in Southern Village, and have become part of the rhythm of community life. Neighbors can sit, recharge, meet a friend, or simply enjoy the outdoors, day and night.
